Atlético de Madrid is punished for racism, and the stadium will be partially closed

The Competitions Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) decided, this Tuesday (30), to partially close the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, in Madrid.

The measure is part of a punishment for Atlético de Madrid for yet another case of racism in the Spanish Championship, this time against Athletic Bilbao striker Nico Williams.

In addition to having part of the stadium closed, Atlético de Madrid was fined 20 thousand euros (around R$ 110 thousand, at current prices) for the case last Saturday (27).

The punishment is still subject to appeal, but, if confirmed, it will be valid for Atlético de Madrid’s last two home games in this edition of La Liga, against Celta de Vigo and Osasuna.

Understand the case

Still in the first half of the match, Nico Williams, Athletic Bilbao striker, was the victim of racist insults when taking a corner. The acts were denounced by the athlete, which forced the game judge, Martínez Munuera, to initiate the protocol for these situations.
