Corinthians overturns América-RN and will have the advantage of a draw in the Copa do Brasil

Corinthians came from behind, but beat América-RN 2-1, this Wednesday (1), and starts with an advantage in the third phase of the Copa do Brasil .

The duel between a team from Series D and another from Series A was held at Arena das Dunas , a stadium in Natal built for the 2014 World Cup.

Supported by the fans, América-RN took the lead in the 12th minute of the game, with a goal from Norberto, who deflected Marcos Ytalo’s shot and deceived goalkeeper Carlos Miguel.

Bidon scores first goal as a professional

Corinthians tied, in the first half, with Breno Bidon, a midfielder who scored his first goal as a professional, after a beautiful individual play by Wesley. The turning point came when defender Cacá headed the ball in the final stage.

América-RN even scored a second goal, with Matheus Ferreira, but the video referee caught the midfielder offside.

The return match will be at Neo Química Arena, on May 21st, a Tuesday. Corinthians can draw and will be in the next phase. If América-RN returns the simple victory, the decision will be on penalties.

Before that, Corinthians returns to the field this Saturday (4), when they face Fortaleza, at the Neo Química Arena, in the Brazilian Championship. The ball rolls at 4:30 pm (Brasília time).

Top scorer deviation

Pushed by the heat of their fans, América started the match, marking Corinthians’ ball and taking control of the game’s actions. It only took five minutes for Carlos Miguel to work for the first time, preventing the first goal from Rio Grande do Sul.

The ball in the net, however, didn’t take long to come out. On the right side of the attack, Marcos Ytalo set up a low shot from outside the area. The shot had a deflection off Norberto, which took Carlos Miguel out of the game and put América ahead.

Quick answer

Upset by the goal, Corinthians soon sought to act to try to cut the loss as quickly as possible. The team, temporarily led by Bruno Lazaroni, began to control possession of the ball and accumulate dangerous chances, such as a header against the crossbar by Félix Torres.

The goal, therefore, came in a very characteristic move for Corinthians in 2024. From the left, Wesley made a beautiful individual play, went to the baseline and crossed low to Breno Bidon, who completed the goal and tied the game.

The first as a professional!

The goal scored by Breno Bidon was his first as a professional player for Corinthians. The player was promoted to Timão’s professional squad in 2022, but only received his first opportunities this season.

In January, Bidon was elected the best player in the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior. The tournament was won by Corinthians.

The new holder

Carlos Miguel showed why he took on the role of starter in the Corinthians goal. After all, if it weren’t for his beautiful interventions, América could have built an even greater advantage on the scoreboard.

Timão’s number 22 performed a miracle with a cross shot from Norberto, in the final stretch of the first half. A few minutes later, with a header from close range, he prevented the team from Rio Grande do Norte from getting ahead on the scoreboard again.

Top scorer defender!

Cacá made his debut as a starter for Corinthians against Fluminense, last Sunday (28), when he scored his first goal for the club. Against América, the player showed that his good position in the aerial game was not a mere coincidence.

He scored Corinthians’ turning point in the match, 17 minutes into the second half. In a corner from the left, Bidu crossed at the edge of the area and found Cacá, who tested for coverage, in the corner.
