Fluminense beats Sampaio Corrêa and opens up an advantage in the Copa do Brasil

Fluminense   beat  Sampaio Corrêa,  this Wednesday (1), in the third phase of the Copa do Brasil ,  2-0 , at the Kleber de Andrade Stadium, in Cariacica, Espírito Santo, opening up an advantage in the confrontation.

The goals were scored by Lima and Arias for Rio’s Tricolor. The teams will meet again on May 22nd, at Maracanã, at 7pm (Brasília time). Tricolor can draw, lose by a goal and win any victory to advance.

Defeat by two goals takes the duel to a penalty shootout. However, classify Sampaio.

Flu dominates, but is not brilliant

Very changed, Fluminense even showed complete dominance in the first 45 minutes of the match against the fragile Sampaio Corrêa. To give you an idea, the Maranhão team didn’t even finish in the first stage. Whether in goal or out.

Fluminense was better from start to finish, but lacked creativity. With a more offensive scheme, Sampaio defended itself with a line of five, to prevent Tricolor’s attacks inside the area.

In this way, Fluminense found a way to be superior and pose a threat. There were nine shots in the first half, but Tricolor found a good weapon: shots from outside the area.

Despite having the ball the entire first half, Fluminense was still far from being a brilliant team. Sampaio’s fragility helped the tricolor game.

Lima opens the marker

Taking so many risks, seeing Sampaio completely defensive, Lima managed to clear the scoreboard in the first half. With a beautiful low shot, from distance, the number 45 opened the scoring for Fluminense: 1-0.

Douglas Costa still hit another good shot from distance, but veteran goalkeeper Felipe saved what would open up even more of an advantage for a dominant Fluminense.

Sampaio improves

If in the first half the Maranhão team did not attack, in the second half they went further and put pressure on Fluminense at several moments. So much so that in less than 20 minutes, there were six submissions.

Fluminense continued at the same pace with superiority, but still without catching the eyes of the tricolor fans.

In the second half, with Fluminense still better in the match, Sampaio Corrêa had chances to score. Bolivia Querida’s lack of aim ended up punishing the team.

Penalty decides the match

With Sampaio in danger and the risk of a possible draw, Fluminense launched the attack and managed to define the victory. Arias was brought down by Fábio Aguiar inside the area, just as he was going to score. The referee signaled a penalty. The Colombian himself scored perfectly and won 2-0.

Overall, Fluminense came away with a deserved victory, but the performance remains worrying. Fernando Diniz will still have a lot of work to do to recover this team.

Return of those away

The match marked the return of Alexsander and Kauã Elias. The duo entered the second stage, after being removed as a form of punishment for a party held at the Tricolor concentration.  John Kennedy continues training separately, while Arthur was not called into action.
