Pickford undisputed number one
Pickford undisputed number one
Jordan Pickford is Gareth Southgate’s undisputed number one. This will be the fourth major tournament where Pickford will be Southgate’s first choice. His ability to start attacks with his feet and the fact he is proven to be able to deal with big moments means his position isn’t in discussion.
The goalkeeper issue Southgate has is the back ups. Sam Johnstone was looking to be Southgate’s number two. He played in the match at Wembley against Australia ahead of Aaron Ramsdale and was due to play in the last camp before an elbow injury ended his season.
Nick Pope has not been in a squad since and has struggled with injury this season.
Aaron Ramsdale has not played regularly this season after his much publicised battle for the Arsenal number one spot with David Raya.
And Burnley’s James Trafford – an U21 Euros winner in 2023 – was dropped by Burnley after a difficult time in the Premier League.
Rangers keeper Jack Butland and Crystal Palace’s Dean Henderson are the last two English goalkeepers who are playing regularly. It would be some turnaround for Henderson who after a £20m move to Palace from United was behind Johnstone.
