Zubeldía explains change in São Paulo’s game and sees a fair draw with Palmeiras

After the 0-0 draw with Palmeiras, this Monday (29), in the fourth round of Series A of the Brazilian Championship, coach Luis Zubeldía revealed the reasons that led him to change São Paulo’s scheme to play in the 3 -5-2 in the match played at MorumBis.

“We were thinking after the game with Barcelona-EQU what was best for the team: playing with three defenders or playing with a line of four. Due to the width of the rival’s field, having seen the games that São Paulo had played with Palmeiras in this way and with the injury to Pablo (Maia), we decided that the best option was to play with three defenders”, he said.

“But, there were three flexible defenders. Diego (Costa) was often at right-back. I think the first ten, fifteen minutes were difficult for us to fit in. The team then started to find more passing lines. Bobadilla and Alisson started to play. Igor (Vinícius) started to worry more. In an equal match, I have the feeling that, in the last ten, fifteen minutes, we could have punished our rival more. The result I believe was fair,” he added

Despite “accepting” the score of the match, Zubeldía only had a hint of dissatisfaction with the end of the game due to the massive presence of the fans in his debut at MorumBis. There were 55,694 people at the stadium.

“It’s really beautiful to play this type of game. I wanted to congratulate the fans because, in many moments, they push, push… now, it was my turn to experience this on São Paulo’s side. Therefore, the feeling that in the last ten, fifteen minutes we could do something more, but far from complaining about the players.”
